Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that can be found in both cannabis and hemp plants.  Its recent surge in popularity is due to three main factors:

1.  Unlike THC, it has no mind-altering effects, and won’t cause any high or euphoria. For those who have sensitivities to THC, it also has the added benefit of creating no paranoia or anxiety either.

2. It has proven, a therapeutic value for a wide range of health issues.

3. It is incredibly safe and easy to obtain.

There are over a hundred different cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, with more still waiting to be discovered. The two most common and significant cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). THC is the compound that has gained the most notoriety.  It is responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis and is the substance that makes the user feel “stoned” or “high.” For this reason, marijuana as a whole was illegal in the United States for several decades.

But another important compound, CBD, has found its way into the mainstream. Sourced from the industrial hemp plant, CBD has been shown to have remarkable healing properties.  It has the ability to regulate many of the body’s important functions such as sleep, appetite, reproduction, temperature, emotion, and more. Notably, it contains nothing that will alter the user’s state of mind, with the exception of its natural capacity for mood regulation.

In December of 2018, the cultivation and sale of industrial hemp became legal at the federal level.  To be classified as industrial hemp, a cannabis plant must contain less than 0.3% THC. This trace amount is not enough to induce a psychoactive response.

Fourmile health carries full-spectrum CBD, which contains trace amounts of the legal limit of 0.3% THC.  It is believed that full-spectrum formulations can encourage the entourage effect and assist in healing.  However, for various reasons, some consumers prefer CBD products with even less THC.  For these shoppers, we offer our 99.9% pure CBD isolate as an alternative.

How Can CBD Support My Health?

The daily use of CBD can support your health and offer many positive benefits to the human body.  Studies have proven its efficacy for a number of conditions, and more research is ongoing. It is also a powerful preventative measure as it protects against cell damage over time. Here is a look at some of the most significant health challenges for which people are using CBD therapeutically.

1.  Stress & Anxiety

Anxiety is how the human body naturally responds to stress. Many people use CBD to relieve anxiety and claim that it works incredibly well, but there is scientific proof of its effectiveness.

Studies have proven that CBD can reduce experimentally induced anxiety on healthy human subjects, confirming that the anti-anxiety qualities of CBD can be an excellent alternative to prescription pills.

The anxiolytic effects of CBD can prove favorable in helping to balance mood and relax the human body. (1)

2.  Inflammation

There are many anti-inflammatory qualities in CBD that can enhance cell viability and reduce apoptosis, the natural way the human body disposes of dead cells.

Cannabidiol is also known to help speed up the healing process while helping suppress inflammation.

CBD also offers a range of cardiovascular benefits which can help with inflammation by improving the blood flow in the human body and the rate of which it recovers. (2)

3. Pain Relief

The analgesic qualities of CBD have been proven to help combat a wide variety of pains. Also, patients who had insomnia caused by chronic pain noted significant improvements thanks to the daily use of CBD. This was due to symptom reduction, rather than sedative effects.

People who workout frequently can suffer from cartilage wear or damage and sufficient evidence has been discovered that CBD can help relieve pain in these scenarios.

The daily use of CBD can also relieve headaches or migraines. As a preventative, it can be used to reduce migraine frequency. Some people even claim to use it to combat hangovers by taking it before a night of drinking. (3)(4)

4. Sleep issues

Sleep is essential for mental and physical well being. Studies have shown that CBD can help reduce the time you take to fall asleep as well as regulate sleep stability.

Studies on healthy people and patients with other primary health conditions proved that CBD could be useful in reducing insomnia.

Jet lag is known to cause a circadian rhythm disorder, affecting the human body’s internal body clock. Administration of CBD can help fight jet lag and assist with the human body’s recovery period. (5)(10)

5. Depression

CBD has been linked to improving symptoms caused by depression by potentiating the effects of serotonin–a chemical that contributes to wellbeing and happiness.

It helps the human body by activating hydroxytryptamine (5-HT1A) a serotonin receptor when serotonin levels are low.

It can also help with the loss of appetite and sleep linked to depression. Further, the antidepressant-like effects found in CBD have also proven not to be addictive, and CBD has no potential for abuse or dependence. (10)

6. Digestive Disorders & Gastrointestinal Diseases

CBD can also be beneficial in the treatment of symptoms that are generally associated with digestive and gastrointestinal conditions.

Studies show that CBD can help alleviate stomach pains, vomiting, nausea, and reduce intestinal inflammation.

The use of cannabidiol for its anti-inflammatory capabilities as mentioned before has also proven to help with the therapy of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

CBD can also help alleviate the pain associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and assist in controlling the interactions between the human body’s immune system and the central nervous system. (6)(7)

7. Bone Health

Bone fractures are one of the most common types of injuries, and there are two types of bone tissue found in the human body; compact and spongy.

CBD promotes bone growth and has been proven to help enhance the fracture healing process by increasing the volume and thickness of the trabecular bone, also known as the spongy bone. These effects are also known to help speed up this process.

Also, the potent anti-arthritic effect of CBD oil has been shown to lower the risk of osteoporosis, a disease that reduces the quality and density of bones in the human body with age. (8)

8. Cancer

A study released by a Spanish university in 2015 confirmed that CBD could be used to combat skin cancer. It demonstrated that CBD has anti-tumoral effects on melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer.

These claims were also backed up by dermatologists at the University of Newcastle in England.

It was also discovered that CBD was a natural analgesic and that cannabidiol helped reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation— the most practiced treatments for cancer.

Nausea and vomiting are common side effects of chemotherapy treatment.
Here is where CBD was most effective, and the analgesic components of CBD helped with the long term pain, and loss of appetite caused by cancer.

Currently, there are also many ongoing studies on the positive effects CBD can have treating pancreatic and liver cancer. (9)
